Quiltmaker’s Statement:

I am honored to have had the opportunity to contribute to the amazing body of work that is the Migrant Quilt Project. When Jody Lyn Ipsen reached out to me, she said she would like to see the saguaros featured. Jody also told me most crossing attempts are made in the darkest hours, hence the night sky. Saguaros are believed to be spirits of people. I made the main saguaro a woman, hands clutched in concern, watching in sadness as tanks roll into the desert. Clothing discarded by those seeking a better life was used in the saguaros to further represent the human spirits embodied within these magnificent cacti. Quilting patterns to convey desert sands and vines to convey our intertwined existence are used throughout the piece.
